Dayton-area filmmaker lands spot next to Pacino in epic Oscar class picture

Quentin Tarantino, Charlize Theron, Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio also ‘got to’ stand new Yellow Springs filmmakers.

There are “class pictures” and then there are class photos.

Acclaimed Yellow Springs-based filmmakers Julia Reichert and Steve Bognar found themselves in one of the most epic photos of all times.

Monday — just days after walking away with the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary for their locally filmed movie “American Factory”  — the couple posed in a who’s who from the movie industry photo during the Oscar Nominee Luncheon held at the Ray Dolby Ballroom.

Dressed in a black pantsuit and a bright pink top, Reichert landed one of the most primo spots of all, smack dab in the middle, right next to  iconic actor Al Pacino (The Irishman) and a stone's throw from actresses Charlize Theron (Bombshell),  Cynthia Erivo (Harriet) and Renee Zellweger (Judy).

Bognar is near Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Robert De Niro (The Irishman)  and Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood).

Reichert, a nationally acclaimed artist who has been called the godmother of the American independent film movement, is battling a rare and deadly cancer.

This Oscar nomination is the fourth for Reichert and the second for Bognar.

“American Factory” follows the creation of the Chinese-owned automotive glass-factory Fuyao Glass America in the same building that had once housed a General Motors assembly operation in Moraine.

Bognar and Reichert, a Yellow Springs couple together for more than 30 years, previously received an Academy Award nomination in the “Best Documentary (short subject)” category for their 2009 HBO film “The Last Truck” about the closing of that very same GM plant that now houses Fuyao in Moraine.
