Wind down tonight for a good cause.

LifeSpan, a Hamilton-based nonprofit devoted to improving the lives of older adults, is holding its fourth annual Spring Brew Review tonight, March 29.

Although the event will feature wine and food pairings and raffle prizes, the craft beers from three local breweries are the true stars of the show.

Grainworks Brewing Company – West Chester

1. Brewers Breakfast – ABV%: 8, IBU: 60

This imperial breakfast stout carries an oatmeal, dark chocolate, and coffee flavor. The coffee is locally roasted by Resurgam, located in downtown Cincinnati.

2. Picket Fence – ABV%: 5.5, IBU: 15

This Belgian white ale (witbier) carries hints of orange coriander and chamomile. However, according to Grainworks founder, Steven Brock, Picket Fence shouldn’t be mistaken for a Blue Moon clone. “Blue Moon bought the recipe from a craft brewer and then dumbed it down for mass distribution. This is a true Belgian White with all the complexity.”

Municipal Brew Works – Hamilton

1. Guthrie Wee Heavy Scotch Ale – ABV%: 9.4, IBU: 30

This dark, sweet, earthy Scotch Ale is flavored with roast malt, caramel, stone fruit and Old World hops.

2. Timber Trail Brown Ale – ABV%: 6.5, IBU: 34

This nutty English ale uses a generous dose of Maris Otter malt (originally bred near Cambridge, England), with a dash of American hops.

FigLeaf Brewing Company – Middletown

1. Hook Craft Lager – ABV%: 5.1, IBU: 19

FigLeaf released this only a few weeks ago, so be among the first to sample this light, crisp golden lager with a distinct malty note.

2. ISO-Trope IPA – ABV%: 7.2, IBU: 68

“Iso” refers to iso-alpha acids, the primary bittering compounds contributed by hops. “Trope” is a wink at the notion that American IPAs are overplayed. This IPA is flavored with floral and fruity American hops, nearly four pound per barrel.
