A dinner series at the Golden Lamb Restaurant and Hotel will combine great food and intriguing local history.
The historic site, one of the oldest continuously running hotels in the country, will host the first in a special series of events, Dinner with History, on Saturday July 28.
Local historian John Zimkus will share stories about Clement Vallandingham, a controversial politician from Ohio who opposed the Civil War, during the evening.
WHAT’S ON THE MENU
A three-course meal, prepared by the culinary team at the Golden Lamb, will feature a local tomato salad, strip steak and seared scallops and strawberry shortcake.
Starter: Burrata and local tomato salad with cucumber, white balsamic vinaigrette, grilled extra-virgin olive oil scented baguette.
Entrée course: Certified Angus Beef New York strip steak and seared scallop with goat cheese pesto mashed potatoes, local summer succotash, cabernet reduction.
Dessert: Strawberry shortcake with pickled strawberries, vanilla whipped cream
Two more historic dinners are scheduled this year. A historian will share the life and wit of Thomas Corwin on Aug. 31. Corwin practiced law in Lebanon and became a United States senator in 1844. The Golden Lamb’s connections to the Underground Railroad will be the evening’s topic on Sept. 22.
CLAIMS TO FAME
The Golden Lamb dates back to 1803 when New Jersey native Jonas Seaman plunked down $4 for a license to “keep a house of Public Entertainment” on Broadway in the brand new village of Lebanon.
Over the years the hotel changed owners and names numerous times but travelers continued to arrive in Lebanon by stage coach, locomotive and then by automobile, always making the Golden Lamb their destination.
Sharp shooter Annie Oakley and astronaut Neil Armstrong are among the famous who have visited the hotel. Literary greats Harriet Beecher Stowe, Samuel Clemens and Charles Dickens also visited.
The Golden Lamb has also played host to 12 United States presidents before, during and after their time in office.
