Cincinnati-based band 3 Day Rule will close out the First Financial Bank After-Hours on The Square @ Union Centre concert series for 2016. The band will present the last concert of the season on Thursday, August 25. West Chester’s 14-week, summer concert series began on May 26.
To gear up for the concert, we talked to the group’s drummer, Lenny Zwick (who goes by Lenny Z on stage) in a recent phone interview Q & A to find out more about the band and their upcoming concert.
Q: Tell us about the band?
A: "We've been together as 3 Day Rule for about eight years. Our line-up includes myself, John Kuper (Johnny Rock), Darren Yoder (Sergio Starsmith) and Sunil Mungur. We're all veterans of the Cincinnati music scene. We have been playing music in some form or fashion for decades. For me, it has been since the mid-1980's. We've played all over town for years – from festivals like the Taste of Cincinnati and Bengals tailgate parties to weddings and special events."
Q: What do you enjoy the most about being in the band, and having the opportunity to play music?
A: "We definitely enjoy watching people when they hear us play. That's first and foremost. They sing the songs with us, and dance along when we are playing, and they are having a good time. That's what it is all about. We're musicians, but we all have day jobs. So, we're 'weekend warriors' in a way, but we enjoy playing as a band, and making good music together. We've been playing together for so long, we're like brothers. We support each other, and it's become a family."
Q: What can fans expect from the concert?
A: "Our thing has always been that we can touch on a little bit of everything. We'll play a 1980's tune, or a 90's song, and then a couple of country songs. We also perform some of the new songs that are popular today. It's the music that everybody's heard, but it doesn't get stagnant. We try to keep things fresh, and we keep it moving, so listeners don't get bored. Also, people are used to hearing a song a certain way, and we are able to produce that. Our lead singer, John Kuper, is able to mimic certain voices, and it sounds just like the original singer. For example, we'll do a Rod Stewart song, and fans will think it sounds like Rod Stewart singing. At our shows, fans can dance, or if they just want to sit there and tap their feet, they can do that, too. We're fun, but we don't take it too seriously. We do Journey's 'Don't Stop Believin'' to 'Uptown Funk' by Bruno Mars, or 'Get Lucky' by Daft Punk. There's something for everyone."
