Steak n’ Shake pursues overnight crowd with menu additions

Steak n’ Shake restaurants have hired more workers to accommodate a new “Up All Night” menu that includes a new “7X7” sandwich with seven hamburger patties and seven slices of American cheese.

The sandwich, called the “7X7,” is priced at $7.77. It contains 1,330 calories, 98 grams of fat, 45 grams of saturated fat and 4,490 milligrams of sodium, according to the nutrition facts page of Steak ‘n Shake’s website . The sandwich’s 98 grams of fat is about 150 percent of the Food and Drug Administration’s recommended intake of fat for an entire day.

The new mega-sandwich is part of the Indianapolis-based Steak ‘n Shake’s expansion into the overnight hours: it now offers its “Up All Night” menu from midnight through 11 a.m. at participating locations, Steak ‘n Shake officials said in a news release. The menu also includes 99 cent breakfast tacos, $3.99 all-you-can-eat -pancakes and another new item, the “Steakburger Slinger,” a skillet of hash browns, chili, two burger patties, shredded cheese and two eggs for $5.99.

The Up All Night menu, including the 7X7 sandwich, is available only at those restaurants that are open 24 hours, and only between midnight and 11 a.m., a Steak ‘n Shake spokeswoman said. Steak ‘n Shake operates eight Dayton-area restaurants as well as locations in the Hamilton, Middletown, Springfield and Fairfield areas. Locations in Springfield and Moraine are not 24-hour operations and do not offer the Up All Night menu.

The addition of the new menu resulted in additional hiring, but a Steak ‘n Shake spokeswoman said she did not have an estimate of how many new employees have been added. A spokesman for the company said staffing levels at each Steak ‘n Shake restaurant are different, “but basically we increased the number of employees during that (overnight and early morning) time period between two and three times.”

The new menu “makes Steak ‘n Shake the ultimate all-night restaurant,” said Jim Flaniken, the restaurant chain’s senior vice president for marketing.

Founded in 1934, Steak ‘n Shake operates more than 500 restaurants across the country.
