Restaurant that burned down to reopen

The Sabor Peruano restaurant that burned down in a fire last November will rise again soon at a new location.

The restaurant’s patrons will not have long to wait and not far to go. The eatery will reopen in about three months at 7425 Dixie Highway, about a half-mile from the former location, said Mary Ticacala, the owner of the restaurant.

Sabor will take place of El Nuevo Rodeo, a Hispanic nightclub that the city shut down in 2014 after numerous police incidents. That building had also been home to the Crystal Palace, a banquet center.

A city salt truck driver spotted the fire that destroyed Sabor Peruano, which had been in Fairfield for eight years. Ticacala said the cause of the fire has never been determined, and no further information was available from the Fairfield Fire Department. The fire caused an estimated $400,000 in damage.

Ticacala, however, was determined to start over, and she wasted no time in doing so, even after watching part of her life burn down.

“You have no idea. It was hard. I live in Springdale, only a few minutes away, and I watched it go up in flames. All my work went up in flames,” she said. “After the fire, I spent two days driving around looking for places.”

Once she found the El Nuevo Rodeo space, she was delighted with it, as it was larger than her former space. The new location is about 18,000 square feet, which will allow for two private rooms. On the whole, however, “everything’s going to be pretty much the same,” said Ticacala.

That should delight fans of the restaurant, which earned four stars on travel sites such as Yelp and Trip Advisor. Sabor Peruano had started in Springdale 12 years ago before moving to Fairfield.

Meanwhile, the former site of Sabor Peruano will be home to another restaurant: Skyline Chili. The Fairfield location at at 7373 Dixie Highway plans to move there in the near future, and redevelopment of the site is already under way.

Joining Skyline in the same building, but in a different space, will be a Bargos Tap and Grill, said the city’s development director, Tim Bachman. Bargos will be relocating from Springdale, making for two restaurants on the same site, said City Manager Art Pizzano.
