Red Onion restaurant returning to Monroe

A restaurant opening in Monroe is using a familiar and popular name.

Shanae Revels of Cincinnati said she intends to open Red Onion Bar & Grill restaurant the week of June 12 at 214 S. Main St., the now-more-than-160-year-old building that was once a stop on the stagecoach line between Cincinnati and Dayton.

“We’re in the final stages, I would say,” Revels said Wednesday. “We’re working on ordering food this week, and I hope to open within the next 10 days.”

The new restaurant replaces Main Street Social, which closed in January after a year in business. That restaurant replaced the original Red Onion, which opened in 2006 but closed in May 2014, with its owner citing declining business and declining health issues.

Revels said she had no role in the original Red Onion but “heard great things about it” from city officials and residents.

“They said the Red Onion did really well in the community, and they loved it, that’s why we chose to keep it the Red Onion Bar & Grill,” she said.

Much of the food will be the same as at the Red Onion but with some additions, said Revels, who noted her 10 years’ total experience in the food service industry after previously helping run a family-owned restaurant/bar in Alabama and a bar in Cincinnati.

The Red Onion is looking to hire approximately seven additional employees to bring staffing to a full complement of 10 employees, Revels said.
