New adult day center opens in Fairfield

Active Day/Senior Care, the largest operator of adult day health services in the United States, recently opened its newest center in Fairfield.

Active Day of Fairfield, 5109 Pleasant Ave., is one of the few adult day centers in Butler County, and is designed to be a cost effective alternative to home health services, nursing homes and assisted living facilities for seniors and people with disabilities.

The center offers a daytime program of supervised health care, social services, nutritious meals and therapeutic activities, including active games like balloon volleyball, cornhole, putt-putt golf and chair exercises, according to Kim Chalfant, center director.

There’s also cerebral activities like word finds, crossword puzzles and memory games, plus arts and crafts activities and Bingo games.

Active Day of Fairfield replaces a similar center that once occupied the same building but closed, Chalfant said.

“It really left a void in Butler County as far as services for seniors and we’re very committed to helping the seniors and the disabled in our area and we felt it was necessary that we give them a place,” she said.

Most patrons of Active Day will meet nursing home level of care but do not want to be in a nursing home, Chalfant said.

“They want to stay home with their families, they want to be able to stay in the community and our goal is to give them an option to do that with support from the employees that we have at the center,” she said.

The center, which is a locked facility, mainly cares for those with cognitive disabilities, such as people with dementia and Alzheimer’s’s disease, who might wander from their home and are not able to be left alone, Chalfant said.

Medical needs are monitored by a nurse on staff throughout the day.

A major impediment for seniors and people with disabilities is that they become very isolated, Chalfant said. Active Day of Fairfield “allows them to have the socialization to stay at their highest level of functioning.”
