Miami grad assumes command of Navy destroyer squadron

An alumnus of the Miami University has assumed command of the U.S. Navy Destroyer Squadron 26.

Capt. William Shafley relieved Capt. Christopher Inskeep and assumed duties as commander during a change of command ceremony last week in Norfolk, Va. Shafley graduated from Miami University in 1994, according to a statement from the U.S. Navy. He is a Westerville, Ohio native.

“To the commanding officers, ships, and staff of Destroyer Squadron 26, I am inspired by you and your efforts,” Shafley said, during the ceremony. “You are all first-rate people, we are going to have a lot of fun.”

Destroyer Squadron 26 is part of the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group, which includes the Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruisers Monterey and San Jacinto, and the squadrons of the Carrier Air Wing 3, according to the Navy.
