JUST IN: Energizer is moving distribution work from Dayton to Monroe

Energizer Holdings is moving its auto products distribution operation from a distribution complex near Dayton International Airport to Monroe, the company has said.

It was not immediately clear how many jobs will be moved.

“Yes, Energizer is partnering with a third-party logistics provider to consolidate shipments of our auto care products into one location in Monroe, Ohio,” the company said in a statement sent in response to questions from this news outlet.

The 570,000-square-foot Dayton-area facility is at 2800 Concorde Drive. The building is less then four years old. An Energizer spokeswoman could not give an address for the Monroe facility.

“Our auto care manufacturing and distribution facility in Dayton does not have enough space to accommodate our full auto care portfolio,” the company’s statement added. “Having one point of distribution for all U.S. auto care products will allow us to better meet our customers’ expectations.

“We have now begun the process of moving products from our Dayton facility to the Monroe facility. We expect to begin shipping out of Monroe in the spring of 2020,” the company said.

Last January, Energizer Holdings, a St. Louis-based maker of batteries and portable lighting products, said it had completed its $938.7 million acquisition of Spectrum Brands Holdings’ global auto care business, which includes the Armor All, STP and A/C Pro brands.

The company cleared regulatory hurdles for the cash-and-stock deal in December 2018, about a month after the deal was first announced.

“This acquisition will transform our existing auto care business and position Energizer as the clear market leader in the auto appearance and refrigerant segments,” Alan Hoskins, Energizer chief executive, said in a December statement.

Erik Collins, Montgomery County development director, said Monday he wanted to gather information about the situation.

The $33 million, 570,000-square-foot center for distribution, manufacturing and research is located near Dayton International Airport, off U.S. 40. Construction for the building started in the summer of 2016.

The building was more than a warehouse. In 2017, Spectrum Brands encompassed a lot of recognizable household, living, garden, pet and auto-oriented brands: Black & Decker, Remington, Rayovac, Baldwin, STP, ArmorAll and many more.

As of April 2017, the center had about 190 permanent employees, and temporary workers fluctuated from about 125 to 200.
