Here’s why you might see items for more than $1 at Dollar Tree

Dollar Tree Inc. is launching products that will cost more than $1 in 100 stores across the country.

The discount retailer known for charging $1 for every item in stores started a pilot earlier this year with multiple price points at rebranded Dollar Tree Plus! stores. The products were introduced at a few of the company’s stores last month, according to a release.

“With its ‘Everything’s a Dollar’ model, Dollar Tree has remained one of the most unique, differentiated and defensible brand concepts in all of value retail. However, we have always been a ‘test-and-learn’ organization that is committed to evaluating all opportunities to deliver great value for our customers while driving long-term value creation,” said Gary Philbin, president and CEO of Dollar Tree.

Prices are not being raised on current Dollar Tree products, the company said. The Dollar Tree Plus! items will be added to the assortment.

“During this test, we look forward to measuring and assessing the initial results and understanding if the introduction of multiple price points across a broader set of stores is in the best interests of our customers, Company and shareholders,” Philbin said.

Dollar Tree Inc., made up of Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores, had net sales increases of 4.6 percent during the first quarter of 2018. Same-store sales increased 2.2 percent.
