Wright State opens a 6-pack to start Horizon League tourney

Grant Benzinger got there first, and then five of his teammates followed.

Wright State put six players in double figures for the first time this season as they beat Green Bay 87-72 in the Horizon League tournament quarterfinals Saturday night at Little Caesar’s Arena in Detroit.

“That’s unbelievable balance right there,” WSU coach Scott Nagy said.

Benzinger went 5 for 5 from the floor, including 4 of 4 from 3-point range, to finish with 15 points.

His 3-pointer 14 seconds into the second half gave him 11 and made him the first play to reach double figures.

Loudon Love led the Raiders with 17 points on 7 of 12 shooting, while Cole Gentry (16), Everett Winchester (15), Mark Hughes (10) and Jaylon Hall (10) also reached doubles.

Five times this year the Raiders had five players score at least 10, including the first meeting against Green Bay on Jan. 18. It also happened Dec. 5 against Ohio Valley, Dec. 22 at Georgia Tech, Jan. 15 vs. Youngstown State and most recently on Jan. 26 vs. Detroit.

Wright State hasn’t had six players in double figures since at least the 2009-10 season. Encyclopedic color analyst Jim Brown said he can’t remember the last time the Raiders had six players score at least 10.
