Jalin Marshall has been in the news for positive and negative reasons this week.

Here are five things to know about the former Ohio State and Middletown football player:

1. Marshall was a standout quarterback for the Middies.

He ran for 1,421 yards and 14 touchdowns while throwing for another 765 yards and 11 scores as a senior in the fall of 2012.

He was the top-ranked prospect in Ohio in the class of 2013 and an early commit to Urban Meyer’s first full-year recruiting class at Ohio State.

2. He helped the Buckeyes win a national championship in 2014.

After redshirting in his first fall in Columbus, Marshall was a two-year contributor at receiver for Ohio State.

He logged 74 receptions as a Buckeye, totaling 976 yards (13.2 avg.) and 11 touchdowns through the air while also picking up 175 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

3. He went pro early in 2016 and wasn't drafted.

But Marshall landed with the New York Jets and made the squad out of training camp, ultimately playing 10 games in two years with that franchise and snagging 14 passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns.

His second season in the NFL was marred by a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policy against performance enhancing drugs when he took Adderall without an exemption from the league.

4. Marshall was one of the stars of a short-lived new pro football league last winter.

Marshall scored the first touchdown in Alliance of American Football history in February but was among the many people left without a job with when the startup league declared bankruptcy in April.

Before getting a shot with the AAF, he said he was preparing to return to Ohio State to finish his degree in journalism.

5. The Oakland Raiders signed him in May, but he was released the same week

No explanation for his abbreviated stint with the Silver and Black was provided publicly, but news came this week Marshall is facing a four-game suspension from the NFL, sparking speculation those things are related.

The news of the punishment from the NFL came the same week the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced Marshall has been added to their practice roster.

The CFL regular season began June 1 and runs through Nov. 2.
