Fairfield High School junior Zach Shupp shed Lancaster’s Logan Agin in less than 10 seconds in ultimate tiebreak, jumped into coach Jason Laflin’s arms and then went straight for the auxiliary gym at the Schottenstein Center.

Shupp had a few pounds to shed Friday night before he could wrestle for the title at the 80th annual Ohio High School Athletic Association state tournament Saturday at the Schottenstein Center.

“I am happy to share this win with my family, coaches and friends,” Shupp said. “My journey isn’t over. My goal is to win it all.”

Shupp and Agin traded escapes through regulation and the 30-second overtimes to head to ultimate tiebreak deadlocked 2-2.

Shupp never hesitated in taking the down position for ultimate tiebreak.

It was simple. Get out and wrestle for a title, don’t get out and come back Saturday morning for consolation placement matches.

“I was comfortable going down in ultimate tiebreak because we work that situation daily,” Shupp said. “The kid was strong, but I felt like I wore him down late.”

Teammate Sam Meddings just missed making it two Indians in the state finals.

Meddings trailed Olentangy’s Trey Greiner 5-3 heading into the third period and was able to get a point for stalling to cut it to 5-4, but was unable to score the equalizer — or winning points — as Greiner hung on the hips and rode Meddings the rest of the match for the one-point win.

Lakota East 285 Jon Spaulding’s hopes of wrestling for a state title came down to ultimate tiebreak as well. Three-time placer Kevin Vough of Elyria recorded the escape in ultimate tiebreak to take a 3-2 win over Spaulding.

Division III: Reece Human's hard luck in the state semifinals continued.

The Carlisle 220-pounder gave up a takedown late in his match with Oak Harbor’s Dylan Thorp to trail 6-4, but appeared to have the tying reversal as time expired as Thorp fought off his back.

However, no points were given to Human in the 6-4 loss.

Carlisle coach Nathan Carmack questioned the call, but the decision stood.

On deck: Wrestling concludes Saturday at the Schottenstein Center. The morning session begins at 10 with consolation semifinals and the third through eighth placement matches. Finals begin with the Parade of Champions at 5:30 p.m.
