No nerves for West Side in LLWS opener

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — So much for a case of nerves on the big stage.

The Hamilton West Side All-Stars exploded out of the gate in their first Little League World Series game, scoring eight runs in the first inning on their way to a 16-6 victory against Toms River, N.J., Saturday afternoon, Aug. 21, before a crowd of 15,400 at Lamade Stadium.

“I was really excited to jump on a team like that,” West Side winning pitcher Jarod Morrison said. “We’ve done it all season, but to do it in the Little League World Series, it felt really awesome and amazing.”

Morrison went 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored, and Jake Jones hit two home runs and drove in five runs to lead West Side’s 15-hit attack.

“I’ve never hit two in one game at any level,” Jones said. “It’s these new batting gloves. I’m telling you, they’re lucky.”

The victory earns West Side a day off today. The team will face Columbus, Ga., in a second-round game at 6 p.m. Monday at Volunteer Stadium.
