Moeller overtakes Fairmont in boys D-I district final

Fairmont’s unlikely run to a Division I district final ended with a decisive 65-50 loss to Cincinnati Moeller at UD Arena on Saturday afternoon.

It was the second of four D-I district finals. Princeton edged Lakota East 53-51 in the opener. Wayne (23-1) plays Oak Hills (18-6) at 7 p.m. and Springfield (20-4) plays Elder (14-11) at 9 p.m. All the winners advance to next week’s D-I regional semifinals on Wednesday at Xavier University’s Cintas Center.

Fairmont (16-10) led by one point after the first quarter and trailed by just three at halftime. Then Moeller (23-3) woke up.

Ryan Hall led Fairmont with 17 points and eight rebounds. Jack Hendricks, Fairmont’s leading scorer and 3-point specialist, hit one of seven 3-pointers and had four points.

Jeremiah Davenport led Moeller with 20 points. Moeller’s Jaxson Hayes, a 6-10 senior who signed with Texas, added 17 points.

Fairmont advanced with a stunning 73-48 bashing of No. 4 seed Miamisburg in a sectional final. Miamisburg brought a 10-game win streak into that showdown and had won at Fairmont in the regular season.

Moeller will play the Springfield/Elder winner at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Cintas Center.
