Maryland vs. Ohio State: What you need to know about Saturday’s game

Series history: Ohio State has won all five meetings by an average score of 55.4-24.

Last game: Dwayne Haskins threw for 405 yards and three touchdowns as the Buckeyes survived 52-51 in overtime at Maryland last season. The Buckeyes tied the game three times in the fourth quarter, the last when Haskins connected with Binjimin Victor from three yards out with :40 left.

Coaches: Ohio State’s Ryan Day is 11-0, including a 3-0 mark last season as interim coach of the Buckeyes. He is 6-0 in Big Ten games. Maryland’s Mike Locksley is 4-11 at Maryland, where his time also includes a stint as interim coach. He is 6-37 overall as a Division I head coach. 

Ohio State notes: The Buckeyes lead the nation with 10 rushes of 40 yards or more… Ohio State is sixth in the nation in total yards (514.8 per game) and second in total defense (224.3)… The Buckeyes are third in scoring (48.3 points per game) and lead the nation in fewest points allowed (7.9 per game)… Chase Young, who will not play Saturday due to a possible ‘NCAA issue’ from 2018, leads the nation with 13.5 sacks… J.K. Dobbins is 203 yards shy of passing Eddie George for third on the school’s all-time rushing list… No team has gained 300 yards against Ohio State yet this season. 

Maryland notes: The Terrapins are 64th in the nation in scoring (29.6 points per game) and 86th in points allowed (30.0)… They rank 129th in the nation in red zone offense… Maryland has the No. 1 punt return unit in the Big Ten and the No. 2 kickoff return unit… Running backs Javon Leake and Anthony McFarland have combined for 1,019 yards and 14 touchdowns this season… Leake is No. 12 nationally and third in the Big Ten in all-purpose yards per game (136.8)… McFarland ran for 298 yards against the Buckeyes last season… Maryland has two players from Ohio: Long snapper James Rosenberry (Olentangy) and reserve defensive lineman Anthony Booker Jr. (Cincinnati Winton Woods)… Ohio State transfer Keandre Jones is a starting linebacker for the Terrapins while former Ohio State defensive backs coach Ron Zook is a senior analyst on the coaching staff… Maryland defensive coordinator Jon Hoke is a Kettering native who starred at Fairmont East.

Quotable: Jones to the Baltimore Sun on facing his former team: “Obviously I had this game marked since I transferred from Ohio State. Nothing personal. I’m still friends with a lot of those guys. The relationship is still good between all of us. I’m excited, anxious to get out there on the field in front of the Ohio State fans, too. It’s a great opportunity for me to end my career, finishing where I started.”
