Centerville junior Cupps has plenty of college options

Xavier, Dayton, Ohio State among the in-state schools recruiting 2023 guard

While Tom House got his college decision out of the way last week, the other top scorer for the defending state champion Centerville High School boys basketball team still has plenty of time to make up his mind.

Gabe Cupps, a 6-foot-2 guard, is a three-star recruit who ranks 141st in the Rivals.com rankings for the class of 2023. His dad Brook, the head coach at Centerville, provided an update on the recruiting process for his son while talking about House’s commitment to Florida State last week.

“We’ve been on a bunch of unofficial visits, just kind of seeing stuff and seeing practices,” Brook said. “He went to Michigan on an official visit in August. He’s going to Ohio State and Indiana in the next couple of weeks. He went down to Clemson. He wants to go out to Stanford. We’re going to go to UD for some practices and to UC for some practices.”

Gabe averaged 11.2 points per game as a freshman and 15.2 points as a sophomore. He has 721 points in two seasons. He led the Elks with 16 points in a 43-42 victory against Westerville Central in the Division I state championship game as a senior.

Xavier was the first school to offer Gabe a scholarship in June. The Dayton Flyers offered him a scholarship later that month. Ohio State, Michigan, Stanford, Virginia Tech and others have also offered him scholarships.

“I think he’s far away in his decision,” Brook said. “I told him you don’t have to wait until after your junior year is over. If you feel like (you’ve found a school) where you want to go, that’s fine. if not, that’s fine, too.

“I think the best thing for him is he’s been able to be on campus and be around these players and coaches, and now he wants to watch them this winter and see what makes sense.”

Another Elks standout, 6-7 senior forward Rich Rolf, the team’s third-leading scorer last season (14.1), announced Saturday he’s reopening his recruitment. Rolf committed to Drexel in August. He has offers from Radford, Eastern Kentucky, Toledo, Lipscomb and others.
