College women’s basketball: MUM roaring toward state tournament

It’s been another season of perfection for the Miami University Middletown women’s basketball team.

The 22-6 ThunderHawks recently completed their second straight unbeaten regular season in the Ohio Regional Campus Conference. They’ve won 32 straight regular-season ORCC contests, a conference record.

MUM’s roster is filled with players from Southwest Ohio. The only ThunderHawk who isn’t, freshman Kyla Wright, is from Richmond, Ind.

Sophomore Kayla Shields (Beavercreek) leads MUM in scoring with a 15-point average. Junior Adrianna Moore (Preble Shawnee) is averaging 13.8 points, 12 rebounds and 3.1 steals per game.

The ThunderHawks are scoring 79.6 points per game and have converted 190 treys this year.

MUM has two more nonconference games remaining — 1 p.m. Saturday at Southern State and 5:30 p.m. Tuesday against visiting Clark State — before the Ohio Regional Campus state tournament begins.

The state tourney will start at Ohio University Lancaster on Feb. 17 with Ohio Eastern facing Ohio Chillicothe at 1 p.m., followed by Ohio State Lima vs. Ohio State Mansfield at 3 p.m.

The event will then shift to the Bennett Recreation Center at MUM. The Feb. 24 semifinals will feature the top-seeded ThunderHawks vs. the OU Eastern/OU Chillicothe winner at 1 p.m and the OSU Lima/OSU Mansfield winner vs. second-seeded OU Lancaster at 3 p.m.

The championship will be decided Feb. 25 at 1 p.m. MUM hasn’t lost a home game this season.

David Hall is the ThunderHawks’ head coach. He’s assisted by Tim Kellis and Joe Webster.
