College Insider: Talawanda’s Richter has All-American basketball season

Ana Richter has completed an All-American basketball season at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Fla.

The 6-foot-1 senior guard and Talawanda High School graduate led the Fire women’s team to a 31-1 record and a spot in the NAIA Division II National Championship quarterfinals in Sioux City, Iowa.

Southeastern defeated Cornerstone 69-64 in overtime and Indiana Wesleyan 83-63 before losing to Dakota Wesleyan 78-64 on March 10 at the national event.

Richter was flooded with honors in a season that included topping NAIA Division II in field-goal percentage (68.9) and finishing second in scoring (22.8).

She was selected as a first-team All-American, a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American, The Sun Conference Player of the Year and a Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete.

Richter, who has a 3.72 grade point average as a management major, was 19 of 22 from the floor and totaled 52 points in Sioux City. That earned her a place on the National Championship all-tournament second team.

The Miami University transfer averaged 7.4 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.8 steals per game this year, shooting 42.4 percent from 3-point range and 67.9 percent from the foul line.

In just two seasons with the Fire, Richter scored 1,041 points. She had 394 during her two years at Miami.

Richter’s sister Sarah Beth, also a Talawanda graduate, was a 6-2 redshirt freshman center for Southeastern this season. She appeared in 26 contests off the bench and averaged 2.8 points per game while shooting 70.5 percent from the field.

Women’s lacrosse: Senior attacker Taylor Swartz (Fenwick) ranks third in points for Siena Heights with 43. She has 28 goals and 15 assists.

The Saints are 10-2 overall and 2-1 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. They will host Indiana Tech at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Adrian, Mich.

Softball: Senior outfielder Kat Burbrink (Lakota West) is hitting .313 with four doubles, one home run, 14 RBIs, 12 runs and five stolen bases for Trevecca Nazarene, which is 22-8-1 overall and 9-3 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

The Trojans, based in Nashville, Tenn., will host Lee (Tenn.) for a 2 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday.
