College Insider: East’s Lowry brothers powering Hillsdale basketball

The Lowry brothers are playing key roles for the Hillsdale (Mich.) College men’s basketball team, which ranks second in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference behind Findlay.

Senior guard Stedman Lowry and sophomore guard Dylan Lowry are Lakota East High School graduates. They’re part of a Charger squad that’s 17-6 overall and 11-5 in the G-MAC.

Stedman has started every game and is Hillsdale’s second-leading scorer (13.2) while also averaging three rebounds and 1.5 assists per contest. He’s shooting 41.3 percent from the floor, 36.6 percent from 3-point range and 82.1 percent from the line.

Dylan is coming off the bench and averaging 4 points, two assists and 1.5 rebounds per game. He’s hitting 38.6 percent of his field goals, 41.4 percent of his 3-pointers and 85 percent of his foul shots.

Redshirt freshman center Matt Fisher (Cincinnati Christian) has played briefly in five games with an average of 0.8 boards.

The Chargers will host Lake Erie on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Women's gymnastics: Senior Brianna Brown (Lakota West) earned her second career all-around title last Sunday as she led seventh-ranked Michigan past visiting Maryland 196.875 to 195.050.

Brown posted an all-around score of 39.425. She was strong in all four events and matched a career high with a 9.900 in floor exercise. Her other scores were 9.875 on the uneven bars, 9.850 on the beam and 9.800 in the vault.

The Wolverines will host Michigan State on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Women's indoor track & field: Dayton senior Jenni Rossi (Fenwick) competed in three events at the Akron Invitational on Feb. 1-3, placing second in the weight throw (18.93 meters), fourth in the shot put (14.16 meters) and eighth in the discus (44.29 meters).

Also for the Flyers, junior Abbie VanFossen (Lakota East) took 15th place with a personal-record time of 18:45.96 in the 5,000 meters.

UD will travel to Geneva, Ohio, for the Spire Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
