Bengals make Ogbuehi demotion official

Two days after benching 2015 first-round draft pick Cedric Ogbuehi for Eric Winston, the Cincinnati Bengals have altered their depth chart to list the 11-year veteran as the starter at right tackle.

After watching Ogbuehi struggle early in the year, the Bengals started platooning him with Winston on Oct. 16 against New England. What began as two series for Ogbuehi and one for Winston eventually flipped the other way.

In Sunday’s 32-14 victory against Philadelphia, Winston started for the first time and platooned with Jake Fisher, the Bengals’ 2015 second-round pick, on a two in, two out basis.

“Eric has been a blessing since he’s been here with us,” Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said Monday. “He continues to answer the bell every time he’s called upon. He steps up and fights his tail off. He is good for the team, the way his mentality and preparation are. Those young guys can’t have any better mentors than they have.”

The depth chart continues to show Ogbuehi as Winston’s backup instead of Fisher, who is listed as Andrew Whitworth’s backup at left tackle. But Lewis sounded as it the plan moving forward is to continue to rotate Winston and Fisher.

Asked what his message is to Ogbuehi, Lewis said, “To go out and practice hard. He’ll get opportunities and make good on them.”
