Area’s top-rated basketball player re-opens recruitment

Xenia guard Samari Curtis announced Tuesday he is re-opening his recruitment.

Curtis, a four-star combo guard who has led the GWOC in scoring the past two seasons, committed to Xavier in February.

The Musketeers changed coaches in April when Chris Mack left for Louisville.

Curtis told 247Sports in late April he was looking forward to playing for new Xavier coach Travis Steele, an assistant who was promoted to replace Mack.

"I am looking forward to how I will develop," explained Curtis. "He recruited me as an assistant and his player development was a big thing, and now as the head coach that is what I am really looking forward to."

The 6-foot-4 scorer averaged 30.4 points per game last season and has moved up in the 247Sports Composite rankings over the past month.

He is the No. 100 prospect overall and No. 12 among combo guards in the class of 2019.

Before committing, Curtis had offers from Akron, Toledo, Kent State and Cincinnati along with XU.

He's the No. 4 prospect in the state and No. 1 among area players, followed by fellow guards Andre Gordon of Sidney and Amari Davis of Trotwood-Madison.

Neither of them have committed yet.

The trio is playing together for the C2K Elite AAU team this spring along with Trotwood-Madison center Justin Stephens and Springfield teammates RaHeim Moss and Sam Towns.
