Remodels good for local construction business

Darren Hoelle, who started Hoelle Construction 16 years ago, said he knew he always wanted to own his own business.

At its start, the company split its efforts evenly between remodeling and commercial building maintenance. Now, about 60 percent of the business comes from remodeling, 30 percent from home repair and 10 percent from commercial building maintenance, Hoelle said.

Remodeling services include baths, kitchens, basements, room additions and more. Home repair includes any and all projects, with the most common ones coming from bathroom remodels and new decks through the new, innovative products from TimberTech, Hoelle said.

Located at 1041 Weller Ave. in Hamilton, the Hoelle Construction serves clients in Butler, Warren and Hamilton counties.

Business has picked up as of late for the company, which employs two full-time carpenter-remodelers and one part-time bookkeeper.

“2010 was the only bad year that I had,” he said. “We have been very busy since March of 2011.”

Hoelle said he would like the company to become busy enough to add a person to work 30 to 40 hours a week to help it get small jobs done a little faster for customers, especially during the summer.

Q: What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve faced when helping the company weather the recession and how did you manage to do so?

A: “I thought we were invincible. I had stopped advertising around 2005, thinking we didn’t need any. The first couple of years of the recession we stayed really busy until 2010. I kept expecting the next month to get better, but it never did. So I started advertising. A couple of things that I tried didn’t really work but one thing did work and it took about six months to really kick in.”

Q: What are the major goals the business is working on and how is it working to achieve those goals?

A: “We have the same goals as when I started: go do a job, try to be as neat as possible, protect the surroundings, realizing it’s a home, not just a job site and do the best work. We also aim to give the customer exactly what they want, even if they may not have been 100 percent sure before we started. We want to make the customer happy so they will tell all their friends. I lead my guys to do that every day. It’s easy when you have guys that have the same goals.”

Q: What’s the biggest change the company has experienced in recent months and how has it dealt with that change?

A: “We try to be lean and not waste time and materials. We save anything extra and try to use it at a later time. We recycle, cut down on trash, add a little income for scrapping metals.”

Q: What are some recent noteworthy accomplishments or awards?

A: “For two years in a row we have earned the Super Service Award on Angie’s List. We continue to maintain an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.”

Q: Where do you want the company to be five years from now, in terms of size and scope, as well as sales?

A: “I really would just love to maintain a steady workload like it has been for the last two years. I like it when I can work my guys about 45 to 48 hours per week. Those few hours of overtime help my employees’ families out so much.”

Q: What advice would you offer to someone just starting out in business?

A: “Do it right or don’ t do it. The only way to sustain business is to give them a reason to trust coming back again and again. Always do the right thing.”
