The fire station is currently installing a safe haven box
. The box is climate controlled and allows mothers to safely surrender their newborns without having to look someone in the eye. Once the door is opened, a silent alarm is triggered and a 911 call is sent.
The baby is now in the custody of Indiana Department of Child Services.
Those considering leaving a baby at a safe haven location or who have questions about options can call the state's Help Me Grow hotline at 1-800-755-4769.
