NEW MIAMI — New Miami High School students are reaching for the stars this week with a homecoming theme of “Midnight Sky.”
Students began celebrating early this week by dressing up, with Monday being Pajama Day, Tuesday Hat Day and Wednesday Nerd Day, according to senior Lacey Harper.
Festivities officially begin 6 p.m. today with the annual Homecoming Parade, which will start at the school, make a loop through the neighboring village of Williamsdale, and return to the school where the traditional Powder Puff Football Game takes place.
The Powder Puff flag football contest finds two teams of New Miami girls squaring off under the coaching of varsity team members, with Jamar Kotey and Casey Chestnut on one side, Derek Matthews and Phillip Swick on the other.
At the bonfire to follow, the football team and cheerleaders will be on hand along with Coach Peter Parker, who will “try to get the school fired up,” according to homecoming coordinator Kara Hanges.
The football game on Friday, against Summit Country Day, also will honor the Tri-State Player of the Week, sponsored by Gold Star Chili. New Miami’s Jamar Kotey ran for 227 yards and scored five touchdowns Sept. 25 in the game against Cincinnati Christian.
The homecoming king and queen will be crowned at half-time. The 2010 homecoming court includes Bo Adams, Casey Chestnut, Emma Elfrink, Jamar Kotey, Janisha Lathan, Derek Matthews, Joey Moore, Alyssa Rison, Phillip Swick and Heather Thacker.
