Japanese steak house will open ‘soon’ in Middletown

A Japanese steak house restaurant chain hopes to succeed where two barbecue restaurants failed.

Taku Japanese Steak House is expected to open soon in the Park East Plaza at 4750 Roosevelt Blvd., Middletown, where Bar-B-Q Junction opened in 2007 and closed soon after and before that, Damon’s operated for numerous years. The space has been for lease since Bar-B-Q Junction closed about six years ago.

The owners of the steak house have applied for a liquor-license permit, according to the Ohio Department of Liquor, but the City of Middletown has not received any building permits or plans, officials said. From the front window, silverware and a bike are visible in the restaurant.

The sign outside the restaurant reads: “Coming Soon! Watch For Our Opening.”

There are Taku locations in Kokomo, Ind., and Columbus, Ind., according to its website. The restaurant offers a menu that includes lunch boxes at $9.95, chef specials from $7.95 to $9.95, and lunch sushi from $9.95 to $12.95, the website said.

The Indiana locations are open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and dinner from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, 2:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday.

The manager of the Indiana locations was unavailable for comment.

Bar-B-Q Junction was owned and operated by former Middletown City Councilman David Schiavone, Ron Decker and Michael S. Treadway. They received a $50,000 loan from the Butler County Commission to assist them in opening the restaurant.
