We spoke to Melissa O’Brien, business services manager at OhioMeansJobs-Butler County, about the details of this hiring event. Here’s what she had to say:
Q: How often does OhioMeansJobs-Butler County hold job fairs of this size and scope and why?
A: "Here at OhioMeansJobs-Butler County we try to hold an event quarterly. That could be a job fair, Business Round Table Discussion, business seminars. We like to offer many different types of networking opportunities for both our business customers as well as our job seekers.
Q: So many companies these days seek to recruit online. why are is an event like this beneficial for both companies and job seekers?
A: “It gives hiring managers a more personal feel for the candidate much earlier in the process, but more importantly, it allows the job seeker to back up the intangibles on their resume. Being able to speak to the employer will allow the employer to see if the job seeker is right for the job, and the right fit within their company. But it’s also a chance for the job seeker to decide if they think they would want to work for their company.”

Q: When planning to attend something like this, what’s your advice to the job seeker who wants to make a solid first impression?
“I would say the job seeker needs to be comfortable with their own style, and be prepared to present an attitude that reflects their sincere interest in getting the job. They should exhibit confidence, enthusiasm and a high level of interest during the first few minutes of meeting the hiring manager during the event. Be yourself and do it your own way, but do it.”
Q: What have these companies told OhioMeansJobs-Butler County is their top challenge when it comes to finding new employees?
A: “They say its a challenge to find job candidates who are problem solvers that are dependable, committed and willing to learn with a positive attitude and a good work ethic. Many of the companies we work with are willing to train job seekers that may not have the qualifications needed. If a job seeker is dependable, willing to learn, has a good work ethic and is committed to learning, companies will make the offer.”
