Woods has been singing since she was a little girl. Originally from Washington, D.C., she moved to Ohio to study music at Oberlin College. After a stint in the business world, Woods decided to pursue music as a career.
“I had been recording my music all along, for the past 15 years. I was searching on social media for people that were in the industry and connected with a group, Birch Street Music. They worked with Beyonce and Destiny’s Child and some other acts, so we started working on new songs, which led to me performing in New York City and Los Angeles. I recorded the music in Atlanta, Chicago and Los Angeles,” she said.
That was about two years ago. Since then, she formed the Dawn Woods band, which has played shows at Cincinnati’s Horseshoe Casino. Although Woods courted musical success, it didn’t happen exactly the way she planned. After she recorded her songs, they ended up in the hands of notable DJs, who added new instrumentation and turned “Capture” into a club hit.
“There were some DJs that had heard my music and thought it would be great to remix it. They take an a capella track and they build a whole new song underneath. So I had DJ Escape — he has worked with Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Rowland … he remixed it. DJ Irene also remixed it. She’s on a label with Carmen Electra. There was a DJ in Israel who remixed it as well,” Woods said.
That led to “Capture” hitting the Billboard charts.
“It’s really cool, because you see on the list Lady Gaga and Katy Perry and Ellie Goulding. It’s just amazing,” she said.
Woods is continuing to promote the song with the video, which is pushing the song back up the charts, impressing her boss at Play on This.
“We’re very proud of her. She’s incredibly talented, and a great teacher and just a wonderful person,” said the owner of the business, Frank McGucken.
“I’m hoping what I’m doing inspired everyone to continue to pursue their dreams, regardless of your age or background,” Woods said.
