With a typical thunderstorm, ice particles begin colliding within the cloud, creating positive and negative charges. Once there is enough energy built up, there will be a release resulting in thunder and lighting.
This same process occurs with thundersnow. This happens when, during a winter storm, we occasionally hear a loud clap of thunder accompanied by heavy snowfall.
