Snapped utility pole in Dayton crash causes hours-long power outage

UPDATE @ 8 p.m.: Service has been restored to all but 22 Dayton Power & Light customers affected by a crash Thursday evening that snapped a utility pole, DP&L spokesman Tom Tatham said.

A car crashed into the pole and landed on its top around 5:25 p.m. on Otterbein Avenue near Stanford Place in Dayton. The outage affected 100 customers, not 224 as originally reported, Tatham said.

Crews were working to replace the pole in order to restore power to all customers.

UPDATE @ 6:59 p.m.: Residents in the area of the vehicle crash will be without electric service for several hours because the car destroyed a utility pole, DP&L spokesman Tom Tatham said.

The outage is affecting approximately 224 customers. Tatham said replacing the pole will require a significant amount of work and it could be 11 p.m. or later before power in the area is restored.

UPDATE @ 6:05 p.m.

Residents in the block around Otterbein Avenue and Stanford Place report they are without power after a car crashed into a pole and flipped over.

According to the Dayton Power & Light Co. online outage map, there are 232 customers without power in Montgomery County. We have reached out to DP&L to find out how many are related to the crash, and when power can be restored.

UPDATE @ 5:50 p.m.

There were no occupants inside a car that crashed into a utility pole and landed on its top this evening in Dayton.

The pole was snapped, but the single-vehicle crash reported around 5:25 p.m. did not bring down any wires.



Otterbein Avenue was shut down in the area of the crash, but Stanford Place remained open while police investigated.
