Dayton-area television viewers who use an antenna to watch WHIO-TV and other stations will need to re-scan their TVs or converter boxes Friday, Oct. 18 because of a federally mandated change.

Television viewers who use an antenna to watch local stations will need to re-scan their TVs or converter boxes today because of a federally mandated change.

Cable, satellite and internet streaming customers are not affected. Only over-the-air television is affected.

Today, some local stations will move from their current frequencies to new ones. Beginning at 10 a.m., viewers who use an antenna should re-scan their televisions or converter boxes in order to watch the stations that made the transition to their new frequency.

Nearly 1,000 TV stations nationwide are moving to new broadcast frequencies as part of a federal change mandated to make room for wireless services.

All Cincinnati area stations except WKRC-TV (Channel 12) will be changing to new digital channels. Viewers won't notice a difference after rescanning their tuners, since they'll still see their old analog channels (5, 9, 12, 14, 19, 48), just like after stations switched from analog to digital broadcasting in 2009.

HOW TO RE-SCAN:

Instructions for re-scanning and answers to other questions are at www.tvanswers.org. Viewers can also call the Federal Communications Commission consumer hotline at 1-888-225-5322 and press prompt number 6.

Re-scanning is necessary for viewers’ televisions to find all available channels. Viewers who have not re-scanned TVs recently may find TV channels that they were missing.

Viewers do not need to purchase new equipment or services to re-scan.

Typically, viewers should be able to select Scan or Autotune from the TV or converter box control menu to start the scanning process. The TV will automatically do the rest in a process that usually takes a few minutes to complete.

After you re-scan your TV set, local TV stations will still be found at their usual channel numbers.

If the first rescan does not work, rescan again or consult the owner’s manual for your television or converter box for more detailed instructions on how to run a channel scan, or contact customer service for your TV or converter box manufacturer.
