Abandoned dog found in Middletown alley

An abandoned dog that was found in a Middletown alley Tuesday afternoon was treated Wednesday at All About Petcare, said Meg Melampy, founder of Joseph’s Legacy, an animal rescue organization.

She said the dog, named Leroy, has parvo, a highly contagious illness, similar to flu in humans. She said Leroy probably is 10 months old and is a mix between a boxer and pit bull.

Leroy, underweight and dehydrated, was placed Wednesday in the care of a medical foster home in Middletown, Melampy said. He will receive intravenous fluids for weeks, and it may take two months before he “bounces back,” she said.

The dog may have been abused because he’s “very fearful” of loud noises and movement toward him, she said.

Melampy said when animals are abused, she doesn’t understand why some people own a dog.

“That drives us crazy,” she said. “Why get one?”
