The international spread of the novel coronavirus has prompted Miami University officials to call home students studying abroad and restrict international learning programs.

School officials also warn students returning from studying overseas they may be subject to a two-week self-isolation ordered by Butler County health officials.

Miami officials issued their orders this weekend, and according to a posting on the school’s Global Initiatives website, three countries impacted so far with the most COVID-19 cases and deaths — China, South Korea and Italy — are the main focus of the action.

“Miami is restricting all travel to these countries,” officials said.

“Miami has already cancelled all of its programs in China for the foreseeable future, and urges students currently in South Korea and Italy to return to the USA as soon as possible to complete their studies. Miami is ready to support you in this transition.

“The COVID-19 situation is rapidly evolving. We encourage members of the Miami community to strongly consider deferring non-essential international travel during spring break. Miami will make decisions about its summer study abroad programs in affected areas in the near future on a case-by-case basis.”

School officials also issued a list of precautions for student and staff travelers that included:

• Monitor travel advisories daily, including potential restrictions on border crossings; countries you visit may decide to implement travel restrictions with very little notice, impacting your ability to return to campus.

•Airlines may cancel/limit flights in or out of a country or region.

• Additional quarantine measures may be applied by the U.S. and other countries. International SOS has compiled a comprehensive list of these restrictions.

• Re-entry to the U.S. could be restricted. Butler County may impose a 14-day self-isolation requirement.
