High-Main Bridge lanes to shut down for huge city gathering

A new, unique event will take place this fall along the High-Main Bridge in Hamilton.

On Sunday, Sept. 23, from 4 to 7 p.m., in observance of National Good Neighborhood Day, tables will be set up along the northern edge of the High-Main Bridge that links the West Side with the East Side — with two-way traffic maintained on two lanes instead of four — so people can hang out and eat and drink, thanks to the Downtown Outdoor Refreshment Area.

Food trucks will offer meals, according to organizers.

Organizers had considered two locations suggested by neighborhood advocate Joanne Wallisch: the courthouse lawn, and the bridge.

The bridge was chosen because it connects the two halves of Hamilton, just as the city’s 17Strong effort hopes to link all 17 neighborhoods, said Hamilton City Council Member Kathleen Klink, a leader of the community-building effort for several years.

“We approached the city, and they thought it was a great idea, too,” said Chris Roehl, chairman of the 17Strong board.
