Trial set for Warren County father charged in death of infant son, abuse of other son

A 2020 trial date has been set for a Clearcreek Twp. man accused of murder in the death of his infant son and of abusing another son.

Cody Colwell, 27, was indicted in the spring by a Warren County grand jury on two counts of murder, felonious assault, and two counts of endangering children following an investigation of the death of an infant, Cayden Colwell, who was found unresponsive in a Clearcreek Twp. home in April.

In May, Warren County Common Pleas Judge Timothy Tepe set bond for Colwell at $250,000.

The prosecution filed motions last week asking the judge to order Cayden Colwell’s medical records to be released by Atrium Medical Center and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, where he was treated before his death. The motions were granted by the judge.

On Tuesday, Colwell was back in Tepe’s court for a pre-trial hearing. The judge set his trial to begin Feb. 3.

Cayden, 2 months old, died April 16 after being taken off life support at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, according to Clearcreek Twp. Chief John Terrill.

Colwell’s 3-year-old son also was examined after the incident and was found to have multiple bruises on his body, including on the shoulder, cheek, neck and abdomen, according to Warren County Prosecutor David Fornshell.
