Inmate claims sharp object found in jail cell was to cut pickles, not use as weapon

An inmate in the Middletown City Jail told police that the sharp-edged object they found in his cell was being used to cut pickles, not as a potential weapon.

The corrections staff received information that Brant Stutler was in possession of a sharp-edged object and they did a search of his cell, according to a police report.

Hidden between the pages of a book inside the cell was an edged object made out of aluminum, according to the report.

The item was approximately 2½ inches long and did have a sharp point capable of causing serious physical harm or death, police said.

Stutler was the only one person housed in cell at the time.

He told police he "found it" and was using the object to cut pickles, however, there was no food or odor of food on it, according to the police report.

The incident marked the second time police had found an edged object in Stutler’s jail cell, according to the report.

One week prior he was found with a sharp piece of metal made into a weapon, according to police. However at that time he had a cell mate and police could not prove who had the weapon. After that incident the jail cell was searched and cleaned, according to the police report.

Stutler was being housed in the jail for obstructing official business, resisting arrest, possession of drug abuse instruments and a bench warrant for failure to comply.

He is now additionally charged with possession of a deadly weapon while under detention, a fifth-degree felony.
