Deputies tracking over 500 registered sex offenders in Butler County

Butler County Sheriff’s deputies spent Wednesday knocking on doors doing verifications of the more than 500 register sex offenders in the county, according to the sheriff’s office.

Starting at 9 a.m., teams of 14 fanned out throughout the county and worked all day to verify resident locations of the registered sex offenders.

“This operation is necessary to keep the people in this community safe by keeping track of where these sex offenders are. If they are not following the orders of the court, they go to jail, it’s that simple,” said Sheriff Richard Jones.

There were not arrests made on Wednesday, but deputies will be following up with offenders found not to be home at the time of the check, said Sgt. Melissa Gerhardt.

Residents can check to see if any offenders are living near their residence at www.butlersheriff.org. Click “SORN” at the top of the page. Residents can also register to be notified if an offender moves near them.
