Club wants to buy, operate fishing lake for seniors’ sake

A senior adult day club hopes to add a little scenery to seniors’ day by offering daily programming at its own pay-to-fish lake.

Northstar Care Services wants to purchase Lake Butler at 7505 West Chester Road and convert the existing house at that site to a more lodge-like atmosphere, according to Richard Maniscalco, director of operations.

That atmosphere is planned to include a deck that oversees the lake, a scenic setting that Maniscalco said appealed to Northstar.

"Seniors love being outdoors like that," Maniscalco said. "So when we saw that, there's really nothing like it for seniors. There's the lake and … you've got the ducks and the geese and we'll put a garden on the side."

Northstar owns Charleston Club at 7786 Service Center Drive, which typically sees about 30 seniors visit each day, on average.

Founded in 2008, the club offers senior adult care services to help enhance and maintain seniors’ independence in a more cost-effective manner than home-based care, when appropriate.

Between 12 and 15 Charleston Club seniors would visit per day and would have constant supervision, according to a staff report to the West Chester Board of Zoning Appeals.

That entity is scheduled to vote Wednesday on whether to grant a variance for Northstar Care Services to bring seniors to the site during the day in a daycare setting.

If the variance project is approved, Northstar Care Services will keep the popular fishing hole, as is, “because that’s the way it’s zoned,” he said.

“You can’t change that. That’s what it’s grandfathered in as,” he said. “We’re just looking to add that other element to it.”
