Most women have their go-to little black dress (LBD) that they wear for almost any occasion. The LBD is good for any occasion, which is why the writers of a new musical at Victoria Theatre are encouraging women to step out and feel sexy and confident for a night.

“Little Black Dress” will be in Dayton Friday, June 14, and the writers and performers want the audience to participate in the musical/improv show. The story revolves around two friends who go through life’s ups and down wearing their LBD’s.

“The show is for women by women. Most productions are written by men. We wanted a title women immediately knew was for them. This is the start of the life of the show,” said Danielle Trzcinski, one of the show’s writers and lead characters.

Trzcinski and Amanda Barker met while on tour performing in “Spank! The Fifty Shades of Grey Parody.” They traveled the country for three years when they decided that there was an audience who wanted to go to a show and party with fellow females.

“As we get older, it’s difficult to find time to celebrate yourself and hang out with your best friends. Ohio is such a fun crowd. You Ohio women like to party,” said Trzcinski.

While Trzcinski has a musical background, her co-writer has a background in improv having studied at The Second City in Toronto. The audience should be prepared to answer questions and have their answers acted out by the performers.

“One couple told us about their first kiss, and we improvised the memory on stage. Just the honesty and truth to see on stage then it’s better than what we could write,” Trzcinski said.

Chris Bond and Natalie Tenenbaum are part of the creative team. Clint Hromsco plays more than 20 different roles in the production while the other cast members include Jennette Cronk, Danni Davis and Rachel McLaughlan.

While the show focuses on women and feminine empowerment, men are still allowed to attend. Trzcinski said many of her male friends love the show.

“The show is so funny and relatable. It’s the perfect date night. If you are a guy and take your girlfriend, she will fall in love with you,” she said.

The show just opened last weekend in Toronto, but has received a great reception. Trzcinski said the current social climate makes right now the perfect time for the show to run.

“It’s so funny because we started writing this four years ago and thought, ‘is it too much?’ With the whole movement, women start cheering during the show. It’s been amazing where we are at in history, and a perfect time where women support each other,” Trzcinski said.

Beyond celebrating women, the Victoria Theatre is collaborating with Clothes That Work (CTW). Audience members are asked to bring gently used professional attire and accessories, appropriate for job interviews, to the Victoria that evening to be donated to CTW. The boutique will also be on site that evening for a special shopping night for attendees that will support its employment training programs.

Trzcinski said this is the first time they are working with a group in order to help women. She hopes that there will be other opportunities at future shows to collect donations for women in need.

“We want this show to be an experience. Many women have clothes just sitting in their closet. Why not give a reason to help each other,” she said.

The show is a perfect place for a girls’ night out or date night with the significant other. The meaning and importance behind the LBD will be revealed through great storytelling and humor.

“We always say the message is not just about the dress. It’s about the woman inside the dress. It’s sexy, confident and brings out the best self,” Trzcinski said.
