Multiplatinum recording artists The Tenors have performed on The Oprah Winfrey Show with Celine Dion, for Queen Elizabeth II during her Diamond Jubilee at Windsor Castle, during the live broadcast of the 2011 Emmy Awards in Los Angeles and at the opening ceremonies of Vancouver’s 2010 Olympics, just to name a few. On Thursday, Feb. 20, at 7:30 p.m. the group will take center stage at Miami University’s Hall Auditorium in Oxford.
“Being able to see them perform live and in an small, intimate space like Hall Auditorium will be an incredible treat,” said Director Patti Liberatore, Miami University Performing Arts Series & Arts Management. “Their performance is pretty magical.”
“The ensemble’s repertoire is very broad. They sing classical music, but they also perform fun, exciting, more contemporary and popular tunes. I think anyone who enjoys beautiful music sung well will love the concert,” she said.
Hailing from Canada, The Tenors (formerly known as The Canadian Tenors) are a vocal quartet comprised of Fraser Walters, Remigio Pereira, Victor Micallef and Clifton Murray. With a diverse mix of training and performance experiences, The Tenors are as comfortable singing classical and operatic selections in multiple languages — English, French, Spanish and Italian — as they are performing pop, folk and world music. The foursome also demonstrates diverse songwriting and instrumental skills as they tour worldwide.
“We are really focused on giving a well-rounded show to the audience and trying to change it up and keep everyone engaged,” said Fraser Walters of The Tenors. “We definitely like to do some things that might be familiar to audiences like Bob Dylan’s ‘Forever Young,’ which is a favorite of ours, or Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah,’ which we were very lucky to sing on The Oprah Winfrey Show and Celine Dion surprised us. We’ve also sang on the Emmy Awards, so ‘Hallelujah,’ really has taken us around the world, literally.”
There are beautiful classical arias that are part of The Tenors repertoire, he said, which feature Pereira and Micallef.
“Clifton and I, the two more pop guys, might sit down at the piano or the guitar and play something that we’ve written, which is also wonderful for us to be able to share the music that we’ve written and co-written. We feel pretty lucky to be sharing such a wide range of music, but we do feel like there is something for everyone. We joke that our demographic is 6 years old to 96. We’ve heard kids arguing with their grandparents over what their favorite songs are,” Walters said.
Additionally, The Tenors’ approximate two-hour show will feature songs from their latest album, Lead With Your Heart, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard crossover charts. The release made history at the 2013 JUNO Awards, when the project was honored with the first-ever award for “Adult Contemporary Album of the Year.” The award was the band’s first nomination and first win. Recently, Micallef had the opportunity to announce some of the 2014 JUNO nominees on Feb. 4 at an event in Toronto.
Touring extensively throughout North America, The Tenors have shared the stage with a number of artists including Sting, Sarah McLachlan, Neil Young, Paul Anka, Justin Bieber, Paul McCartney, Brian McKnight, David Foster, Natalie Cole and others. In other highlights, The Tenors will join Cirque du Soleil Artists for a guest performance at One Night for ONE DROP on Friday, March 21 at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. In March, the band will also embark on their first tour of the UK.
“There are so many wonderful things for us to be grateful for and we can’t wait to come and perform in Ohio,” Walters said.
