Governor-Elect Mike DeWine announced retired Maj. Gen. Deborah Ashenhurst, who served in the Ohio National Guard for nearly 40 years, will fill the Veterans Services cabinet position.
DeWine named 14 more people to his cabinet and staff. Ashenhurst commanded and has held staff officer assignments at all levels from company, battalion, brigade and Joint Force Headquarters.
She also served as the adjutant general and commander of the State of Ohio, a position she left in 2014. In that role, Ashenhurst commanded the 18,000 personnel of the Ohio Army and Air National Guard, Ohio Military reserve and Ohio Naval Militia.
Ashenhurst began her career in 1978 when she enlisted in the Ohio National Guard. She was commissioned an engineer officer in 1980 through the Ohio Army National Guard’s Officer Candidate School.
She succeeds Col. Chip Tansill, who served in the role under Gov. John Kasich.
