For the second week in a row the Bengals were called for a 15-yard taunting penalty. But unlike Rey Maualuga’s penalty last week at Cleveland, Reggie Nelson’s nearly cost the team.
Nelson’s penalty, which came after Adam Jones had intercepted Peyton Manning with the Bengals trailing 28-27 in the fourth quarter, moved Cincinnati from the Denver 25 to the 40. The offense went three-and-out, forcing the Bengals to punt rather than try a go-ahead 42-yard field goal attempt.
“I can’t do that,” Nelson said. “I can’t get put the team in a position like that, especially going against a Peyton Manning. We needed that field position, and I take full blame for that. A dude on the sidelines was talking, but I’m not going to get into that. It was my fault. Period. I can’t do that as a veteran.”
