Zack Cozart’s wife told him to ‘quit being a baby ... one team’s trying to win’ when deciding between Angels, Reds

Chelsea Cozart, the wife of former Cincinnati Reds shortstop Zack Cozart, had tough words for her husband when he could’t decide whether he should re-sign with the Reds or sign with the Los Angeles Angels.

According to Pedro Moura at The Athletic, Cozart knew if he signed with Anaheim he would be playing third base with some time at second. The Angels then signed Ian Kinsler, a standout second baseman, which made it clear to Cozart it was third base or nothing if he went to the Angels.

His wife wasn’t very sympathetic to his predicament according to Moura:

Cozart hung up the phone. He and his wife, Chelsea lingered along the curb to discuss it. he was already going to move from his lifelong shortstop to accomodate Andrelton Simmons (current Anaheim shortstop). Would this be much different? His wife moved the conversation forward with force.

“Quit being a baby,” she said. “Do you want to play for the Reds, or do you want to play for the Angels? One team’s trying to win.”

The Angels fortunes have been mixed, with the team finishing second in the AL West last season, two games below .500 and out of the playoff race. That hasn’t stopped the team from spending money to compete.

The Reds are starting their fifth year of rebuilding. Their last playoff appearance was in 2013, a loss to Pittsburgh in a play-in game. The next season the team finished fourth in the division and has finished last every season since.
