Miami’s Miele, Reichard nab CCHA weekly college ice hockey honors
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – A pair of Miami hockey players earned CCHA weekly honors the Central Collegiate Hockey Association announced Monday, as senior forward Andy Miele was tabbed Offensive Player of the Week while junior goalie Cody Reichard garnered Goaltender of the Week accolades.
Miele led Miami to a sweep of Michigan with his fourth-straight five-point weekend, tallying a goal and four assists. He recorded multiple points both nights, including assisting on all three goals Saturday, as he extended his point streak to career-long-tying nine games. The assistant captain now has seven multi-point games in his last eight contests.
Reichard also guided the ‘Hawks to a second-straight regular-season sweep of Michigan, as he picked up the win in net both nights. He stopped a combined 53 of 55 shots he faced, including pitching his third shutout this year Saturday with 23 saves. The netminder now has 40 wins for his career, which ties for third in Miami history, and has 10 career whitewashes, two shy of the school record.
RedHawks 12th in ice hockey polls
OXFORD, Ohio – A sweep of then-No. 8/9 Michigan was only enough to bump Miami up one spot in both national rankings from 13th to 12th, as both the USCHO.com Poll and the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll were released Monday.
The RedHawks (16-9-5, 13-7-4-2 CCHA), who now sit atop the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings, totaled 479 points in the USCHO Poll, up 52 points from a week ago, but are still 42 points behind No. 11 Merrimack. Miami picked up 152 points in the USA Today poll, 57 more than last week, and sit 33 points back of Merrimack, who’s also 11th in the USA Today Poll.
For the third straight week, the RedHawks will face a top-15 team, as No. 15/15 Western Michigan comes to Oxford for a two-game set Friday and Saturday. Friday’s game starts at 7:35 p.m. while Saturday is set for 7:05 p.m. at Steve Cady Arena. The two sides split in Kalamazoo back in November.
