Gerbus goes deep, Joes rip Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Wally Gerbus homered, doubled and drove in four runs Wednesday as the visiting Hamilton Joes blasted the Lexington Hustlers 10-1 in Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League baseball action.

Winning pitcher Patrick Curtin, Chris Miller, Geoff Boylston and Mike Avila combined on a five-hitter for Hamilton, which improved to 11-13. Among the Joes’ leading hitters were Josh Jeffery (2-for-3, RBI), Marcus Davis (two RBIs) and Zach Willis (RBI).

Hamilton will be at home today at 7:05 p.m. against the Cincinnati Steam.

Miami’s Harwell on Biletnikoff list

Five Mid-American Conference wide receivers were named to the 2011 Biletnikoff Award Watch List, honoring the nation’s best football wide receiver.

Miami University sophomore Nick Harwell, Western Michigan senior Jordan White, Bowling Green senior Kamar Jorden, Toledo junior Eric Page and Central Michigan junior Cody Wilson were all named to this year’s list.

Harwell emerged for MU as a freshman with 64 receptions for 871 yards and six touchdowns. Harwell led MAC freshman wideouts in receptions, yards and touchdowns. In 14 games last season, Harwell averaged 62.2 yards per game.
