Scooter Gennett leads 3 Reds in top 5 of All-Star Game voting

Three Cincinnati Reds are in the top five at their position in the latest MLB All-Star Game balloting figures released Monday.

Second baseman Scooter Gennett has the best shot to win a starting spot in the Midsummer Classic, which is slated for July 17 at Nationals Park.

He moved within less than 170,000 votes after a strong week of voting but still trails votes-leader Ozzie Albies of Atlanta (1,857,185).

Chicago’s Javier Baez is also still in the running at second base with 1,586,888 votes, good for third behind Gennett’s 1,689,393.

Eugenio Suarez is fourth among third basemen with 601,219 votes, but Colorado’s Nolan Arenado holds a commanding lead with more than 2 million votes.

Joey Votto is fifth in voting at first base with 479,803 while Atlanta’s Freddie Freeman is on top at that position with nearly 3 million votes.

Voting ends Thursday.
