Josh Myers knew after Ohio State’s defeat of Michigan where he wanted to play college football. When the Buckeyes won the ensuing national championship, that sealed the deal.
“It means the world to me to be a Buckeye,” said Myers, a Miamisburg High school sophomore offensive lineman who verbally committed to OSU on Sunday.
“It’s a great feeling that’s hard for me to even fathom that I’m going to be a part of that. It’s been a great requiting experience. I knew where my heart was at and that was at Ohio State.”
Myers is the first area sophomore to verbally commit and currently the second incoming OSU recruit. Wayne senior Robert Landers soared up the recruiting radar during an outstanding postseason run that ended in a Division I state championship loss to Lakewood St. Edward.
A nose guard, Landers landed an offer from OSU soon after that game, decommitted to West Virginia and sided with the Buckeyes.
Myers, 6-feet-6 and listed at 285 pounds last season, was ranked anywhere from 1-3 in the nation at his position by most national recruiting services. He had offers from most ranked BCS programs by the end of his freshman season.
A frequent visitor to the OSU campus, Myers participated in invite-only summer camps and also attended the 2014 spring game with other desirable recruits.
He was asked to make a campus visit on Sunday with OSU’s coveted incoming high school seniors. He ended up committing along with Moeller junior tight end Jake Hausmann.
With his family and Miamisburg coach Steve Channell there, Myers told OSU head coach Urban Meyer he wanted to be a Buckeye. Meyer immediately announced to those in the room that OSU just landed a commitment from the No. 1 recruit in the nation from the Class of 2017. Meyer then called Myers’ aunt and grandmother to tell them the news.
“It was very emotional,” Channell said. “It was a lot more than I thought it would be.”
Myers was instrumental in Miamisburg going 8-3 this season and 7-4 his freshman year. The Vikings qualified for the D-I, Region 2 playoffs each season. Myers was second team All-Ohio as a sophomore, All-Area first team and All-Greater Western Ohio Conference.
He also is a starter on Miamisburg’s basketball team, averaging 10.1 points and 10.4 rebounds.
Josh’s older brother Zach Myers is a 6-3, 287-pound center at Kentucky, where he’ll be a junior next season.
Wednesday, Feb. 3, is national signing day for football. The weeklong signing period is for high school seniors only.
