High school football: Lakota West standout commits to Kentucky

Alex Afari is headed south for college.

The Lakota West standout verbally committed to Kentucky on Friday.

Afari is a four-star cornerback prospect per rivals.com and a three-star “athlete” in 247Sports Composite rankings.

He is the No. 13 player in the state of Ohio per 247Sports Composite and the seventh-ranked player in the local coverage area.

Afari had 16 tackles and two interceptions last season for the Firebirds, who won the GMC.

He is among several members of the class of 2022 to issue verbal commits so far, a group that includes teammates Jyaire Brown and Tegra Tshabola. They are both going to Ohio State.

So is Alter linebacker C.J. Hicks while fellow Knight Derrick Shepard Jr. has committed to Cincinnati and Wayne tight end Elijah Brown committed to Alabama and Centerville quarterback Chase Harrison gave his pledge to Marshall.

Kentucky has made a habit of recruiting Ohio over the past few years.

The Wildcats roster has 21 players from the Buckeye state, including Jutahn McClain of Fairfield, Justin Rigg of Springboro, Moses Douglass and Isaiah Gibson of Springfield and Matt Ruffolo of Alter.
