FAIRFIELD — A pair of repeat winners were featured at the Fairfield City Senior Golf Championships held Thursday, July 23, at Fairfield Greens South Trace.
Dan Smith, who won the 56-59 age bracket last year, collected four birdies en route to a 72 to claim the 60-65 crown, while Ron Petty defended his 50-55 title with a 74.
Ed McCoy fired 34 on the back nine to finish with a 2-over-par 72, good for first in the 56-59 group while tying Smith for overall low score.
“I got lucky,” McCoy joked. “I hit a couple of iron shots real tight, they rolled up close to the pin.”
He was 4-over after 14 holes, but birdies on the par-5 No. 15 hole and the par-4 No. 16 dropped him to 2-over. After the birdies, he said he knew he “was in pretty good shape,” but he didn’t know he was in the lead.
“I knew there were some good golfers out here and scores would be low,” he said.
Bill Brannock finished with a 75 to take the 66-70 title, while Don Regner finished with the same score to win the 71-plus group.
“I had a hot putter,” Regner said. “I started with double bogeys on 1 and 2, but I made some shots.”
Birdies on holes 6, 8 and 9 helped Smith to a 2-under 33 on the front nine.
“I played pretty well. I hit a couple in the water, but all and all it was pretty solid,” he said.
Even though the course withstood a heavy rainfall Wednesday and brief shower during play, the course was in good shape.
“It was damp, and the greens were holding real well,” Smith said.
Petty and Rick Patterson played in the same group and were tied with two holes remaining.
“I got a birdie on 17, and I was very fortunate,” Petty said. “Rick putted first from about the same spot as me so I got a perfect read.”
Jerry Leshner finished with a 73 for second in the 56-59 group. Steve Sabo’s 74 made him the runner-up to Smith. John Keating had a 76 to finish behind Brannock. And Eddie Russell, with a 79, grabbed second in the 71-plus bracket.
